About Diana Tripp

Diana Tripp "Soothing the Soul" | Diana Tripp

When asked, many artists will declare that they have been artists since the time they were children. Pastelist Diana Tripp tells a different story. Tripp grew up in Rochester, New York, and as a kindergartener, her teacher provided the class with colored paper and instructed them to make flowers. Tripp dove in with all her heart, and loved the process. When she was finished, she sat admiring her rendition of a beautiful green flower. Tripp’s teacher wasn’t impressed, however, and scolded her for using the green paper as petals. “Flowers aren’t green!” the teacher said, “That paper was for the stems and leaves!”

Mortified, Tripp threw her flower away and closed the door on her inner creativity. Tripp recalls, “This may be all that I remember from that incident, but the shame persisted for years. I was totally blocked when it came to art. Throughout my education I never went to art shows or museums, and I dreaded any art classes or situations where I might have to express myself creatively.” Tripp’s artistic inhibitions would last for 50 years.

Tripp instead focused her education on psychology, special education, and spiritual counseling. She earned a degree in psychology at the University of Colorado and went on to study special education, attending graduate school at Lesley College a Keene State.

For a time, Tripp worked as a psychiatric social worker helping the mentally impaired find good placement. “My work was always very rewarding for me,” Tripp says. “Those with disabilities or learning challenges have an air of gratitude when they are given alternative learning skills and that is a joy to be around.”

Still, there was something missing in Tripp’s life. In 2001, Tripp was visiting a close friend, Erin Robbins, in Boulder, Colorado. “During our visit,” Tripp explains, “Erin told me about her new art workshops which worked on breaking through mental obstacles to creativity.” To her own confusion, Tripp burst into tears. After returning home to Sedona, Arizona, she continued to wonder why she had reacted so emotionally to her friend’s news. Eventually, Tripp asked Robbins to come to Sedona and teach the workshop so that she could break through her own mental blocks.

“That was really the beginning of my art career,” Tripp says. “I totally enjoyed and embraced the world of creativity. I made new discoveries each day, and set up a studio in my home. I invited two other artists to come and join me. The three of us continued over the next four years to paint together on a weekly basis. I also immersed myself in courses at the Sedona Arts Center.” Tripp would spend the next twelve years taking classes and learning how to master and hone in on her own artistic style.

During this crucial period of artistic rediscovery, Tripp studied with several professional art coaches, and attended workshops and seminars where she learned different techniques for her craft. She explored various media, including acrylics, watercolor, pencil, and even airbrush .
Eventually, she fell in love with pastels and now paints exclusively in the medium.

" The Divine has been my source of inspiration and clarity," Tripp explains. " My faith has not only offered me a love of nature and beauty, but also an embodiment of silence and stillness from which all creation flows. My inspiration is not to copy nature in all her splendor, but rather to capture her feel, to highlight nature's truly vivacious life, by pushing the boundaries of color utilizing the high intensity of bright, bold hues." Beauty , peace and simplicity can be found at the core of each creation. "My deepest desire is to create art the soothes the soul.
“I don’t get too tied up in theory or technique,” Tripp explains. ”I go with the feeling of my expression."

"I learned most of the techniques I use from Teri Gortmaker, an exceptional artist and teacher with whom I have worked for seven years. I have added unique touches and variations as my own artistic expression has emerged.”

Tripp gravitates to an artist’s use of color. “When someone can create a deep feeling through their art it certainly gets my attention. I may not be a student of art, but I certainly have an appreciation for art that speaks to my heart and soul.”

Tripp's inspiration for subject matter often comes from her spiritual awareness. Silence and stillness inspire her creative endeavors. She has worked as a spiritual counselor for many years and whether she is assisting another or is in quiet contemplation, Tripp feels connected to what she calls The Divine. “The Divine has been my source of inspiration, clarity and point of view,” Tripp explains.

Tripp has been showing her work nationally since 2004 and has won several major awards, most recently the Gallery choice Award from Creative Framing, 1st Place in the Pastels BAA/LAG Member’s Show in Longmont, Colorado, and 3rd Place in the Louisville Spring Member’s Show in Louisville, Colorado. She has consistently been represented by galleries, including pARTiculars Gallery & Teaching Studio in Lafayette, Colorado, and Silverleaf Framing & Art Boutique in Boulder, Colorado. She has been a part of several group exhibitions as well as several solo shows. Tripp’s career as a full time artist continues to thrive.

When she’s not in her studio creating wonderful pastel scenes of surrounding life, Tripp can be found hiking through her beloved outdoors. She is constantly exploring for new inspiration, and sometimes the motivation comes from meditation or a lucid dream.

After a long absence in her life, artistic expression has become the centerpiece of Tripp’s life. "My continuous goal is to discover and demonstrate what is truly extraordinary yet seems simple and ordinary in the displays of everyday life.” If you happen to be fortunate enough to visit her home studio and gallery in Boulder, CO, you may see somewhere in her collection a beautiful green flower turning its face to the sun.

Artist Statement
My deepest desire is that my art “soothes the soul”. My goal is to move and touch the viewer emotionally. The purpose of the art is not so much to present a pretty picture or to capture the details of a location as it is to ignite an emotional response that inspires one to examine their own inner thoughts and feelings being evoked by a particular image before them.

In my search, I experimented with various media and techniques, but once I encountered pastels, they took center stage in my life and I’ve continued exploring deeper and deeper ways of expressing myself through this rich, sensuous media. I find that in being able to work directly with my hands, I’m able become more personally involved with both the art and the art from itself.

The inspiration for my art often comes from either my Spiritual search and from my dream state. I wake up with a message or a vision of something that wants to be expressed. This relationship with the Divine reflects the Essence of Who I Am – and therefore key in all things that I would choose to express, especially my art. Beauty, peace, stillness and simplicity can be found at the core of each creation. My continuous goal is to discover and demonstrate what is truly extraordinary in the simple and ordinary displays of life.
